Sweden vs Finland

This weekend it was the world cup final for hockey between Sweden and Finland.  Raquel and I went with our hosts from Stockholm, Sofia and her boyfriend Daniel who came to visit her.  Before the game we had dinner at chez Leon, where everybody except Raquel and I had mussels. // Ce week-end il y avait le final de la coupe du monde de hockey entre la Suède et le Finlande.  Raquel et moi, on est allé avec nos hôtes de Stockholm, Sofia et son copain Daniel qui est venu pour lui rendre visite.  Avant le match on a diné chez Léon, et tout le monde sauf Raquel et moi a mangé des moules.  

Daniel told us how competitive Sofia can be so to prove to us that she was the strongest at the table, she challenged Raquel to an arm wrestling match in which she won. // Daniel nous a dit combien Sofia aime la compétition et aime encore plus gagner, alors pour nous prouver qu’elle était la plus forte, à table, elle fait un bras de fer avec Raquel et elle a gagné.

After dinner we went to a bar to watch the game and there were soooo many blond people there!  That made it difficult to say who supported which team because there were flags and colors representing both countries. // Après le diner on est allé au bar pour regarder le match et il y avait vachement beaucoup de blonds là-bas.  Alors au début c’était difficile à dire quelle équipe ils supportaient parce qu’il y avait des drapeaux et des couleurs des deux pays.

Daniel asked Raquel and I who we wanted to win and we answered Sweden! right away.  And like magic, he pulled out our favorite Swedish cookies from his jacket!  Singoallas!! // Daniel a demandé à Raquel et moi, quelle équipe on supportait et on a répondu toute de suite, la Suède !  Et comme par magie, il a sorti nos biscuits suédois préférés de sa veste !  Voilà les singoallas ! 

There was a lot of team spirit so we took a picture with this swede because I really liked her viking hat.  Don't ask, I don't know why Raquel and I are doing star trek signs with our hands. // Il y avait beaucoup d'esprit d’équipe donc on a pris une photo avec une suédoise parce que j’ai aimé bien son chapeau de viking.  Ne me demandez pas, je ne sais pas pourquoi Raquel et moi, on fait les signes de star trek.

1447: A decree warns the public for fake diamonds, which proves that Antwerp is already big in the diamond industry

1503: The connection of Bruges to the sea has turned into sand.  The Antwerp harbour is happy to take over business.  Portuguese spices, English cloth and German metal now come in through Antwerp and make them rich, happy and proud.

1576: The Netherlands close the entrance to the Scheldt river; since Antwerp is a competitor for their cities.  Exit richness, happiness or pride.

1843: The zoo is opened.  It's meant only for the rich, but at least it's one of the first zoo's in Europe.

1885: A student of the Antwerp Academy, Vincent Van Gogh, is told to go looking for a real job.  Vincent washes away his disappointment with some glasses of absinthe and moves to Paris.

2009: Big hype.  A baby elephant is born in Animal Affair (the zoo).  She's named Kai Mook, which the zookeepers think is Thai for 'pearl'.  It turns out that Kai Mook actually means 'chicken.'

This weekend I went to Antwerp again to shop with my favorite swede, Sofia! // Ce week-end je suis allée à Anvers encore pour faire du shopping avec ma suédoise préférée, Sofia ! :)

After lunch we went to a champagne bar that I wanted to go to the last time.  It was really fancy and pretty pricy as expected. // Apres le déjeuner, on est allé au bar à champagne, où je voulais aller la dernière fois !  C’était très fancy, et assez cher comme je m'y attendais.     

Then we walked around for a little bit, the weather was nice but it was pretty cold for the middle of May! // Puis on s’est baladé, il faisait beau mais il faisait assez froid pour la mi-mai !

Instead of paying 19 euros to go to the zoo, we decided to only see the giraffes.  On our map we saw that there were windows to see the giraffes for free, just behind central station.  Apparently, central station is gargantuan, aaand it wasn't as easy to find these windows as we thought.  // Au lieu de payer 19 euros pour aller au zoo, on a décidé de ne voir que les girafes.  Sur notre carte, on a vu qu’il y avait les vitrines pour voir les girafes gratuitement juste derrière la gare centrale.  Et en effet la gare centrale est énorme, et ce n’était pas aussi facile de trouver les vitrines qu'on ne le pensait.

We finally found the windows! and...there were too many trees so it was almost impossible to see anything! // Enfin on a trouvé les vitrines ! et…il y avait trop d’arbres donc c’était presque impossible de les voir!

  

Springtime in Brussels // Le printemps à Bruxelles

These pictures are a little out of order, I took them in April...but I wanted to show how the weather has changed since we got here.  This is what Spring looks like in Brussels! // Ces photos sont dans le mauvais ordre, je les ai pris en avril…mais je voulais montrer comment le temps a changé depuis notre arrivée.  Voici le printemps à Bruxelles !   

These pictures are of a labyrinth in Uccle (about 5 minutes from my house on foot).  We found this labyrinth in a book called Bruxelles Insolite (Brussels off the beaten path) from the filigranes bookstore.  // Ces photos sont d’un labyrinthe à Uccle (5 minutes de chez moi).  On a trouvé ce labyrinthe dans un bouquin à la librairie filigranes qui s’appelle Bruxelles Insolite.

Sunday à Mons

We went to Mons on Sunday which is in Wallonie, more or less 20 km from France (12ish miles I think?).  Because it was Sunday, and nothing is open on Sundays, there wasn't too much to do other than seeing their Grand'Place and have a drink there.  Other than Grand'Place, there was nobody in town, it was reeealllly quiet, but I guess that's what made it nice : ) // On est allé à Mons ce dimanche, ça se trouve dans le Wallonie à +/- 20 km de la France.  Parce que c’était le dimanche, et rien n’est ouvert le dimanche, il n’y avait pas grand choses à faire sauf voir la Grand’Place et y prendre un verre.  A part de la Grand’Place, il n’y avait personne en ville, c’était vraiment silencieux, mais c’était sympa quand-même.    

Discovery day at the European Union // l'UE journée de portes ouvertes

This weekend it was "discovery day" at the European Union.  For those who don't know, Brussels is the seat of the European Union.  I guess that means that all of the important stuff happens here.  Anyway, Anthony and I went to the European Commission.  Outside, they had kiosks for face painting, free fruits and even a little concert with bands that I never heard of.  // Ce week-end il y a eut lieu la journée de portes ouvertes de l’Union Européenne.    Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, l’Union Européenne se situe à Bruxelles.  Je suppose que ça veut dire que toutes les choses importantes s'y passent.  Anthony et moi, on est allée à la commission européenne.  Dehors, il y avait des kiosks de maquillage des visages, des fruits gratuits et même un petit concert avec des groupes que je ne connais pas.

We walked around inside through different departments like energy, the environment, and we even got to see where the interpreters work!  // On s’est baladé à l’intérieure parmi les différents départements  comme l’énergie, l’environnement, et on a même vu la salle des interprètes ! 

   

At every station there were different activities depending on the department.  There was one activity to see if you could tell the difference between the euro and fake euro but there were too many people there so we went to the interpreters room!  There, we both completed a puzzle that had all of the EU languages (I think) and we won t-shirts! //  A chaque station, il y avait les activités différentes à faire selon le département.  Il y avait une activité pour voir si on pouvait voir la différence entre l’euro et le faux euro, mais il y avait trop de monde là, donc on est allé à la salle des interprètes.  Là, on a fait un puzzle où il fallait remplacer toutes les langues de l'UE (je pense) et on a gagné des t-shirts !

Apart from the t-shirts, we got a lot of free stuff like bags, a map of Europe, and even flowers when we left! // En plus des t-shirts, on a reçu beaucoup de choses gratuites comme des sacs, une carte d’Europe, et même des fleurs quand on est sorti ! :)
